Statistics prove that strong visuals are increasingly important for nonprofits. Photos and graphics are much more eye-catching than the written word. Including visuals on your blog can create a more engaged audience that is more likely to interact with and share your content — something that can help to reach your nonprofit’s marketing and communication goals.

Here are a few of tips to refresh your blog’s visual strategy:

Use Infographics

Studies have found that 90 percent of information we remember is based on visual impact, so having an infographic — the perfect combination of attractive visuals and relevant information — will make it easier for target audiences to remember your content. According to the Search Engine Journal, using an infographic can increase traffic to your website by 12 percent!

Infographics are a great way to share your nonprofit’s latest evaluation results or facts about your subject-area, and can enhance your nonprofit’s brand awareness by 82 percent!

Create an Animated GIF

GIFs are a great way to make a memorable impression since they are entertaining, short and easy to access — perfect for the short attention span and fickle habits of the average online user. Hubspot lays out simple instructions on how to create a GIF and turn an otherwise flat graphic into something animated to create more interest.

Optimize Images for SEO

SEO overwhelms many people but there are simple tricks to optimize your images for SEO. For example, create a meaningful filename so your blog post will come up when people are searching for content with the same keywords. For example, name the file so it reflects the contents of the image, such as “nonprofit-volunteering-pdx.jpg,” rather naming it “IMG5832.jpg.”

Also, make sure the images in your site don’t have overly long paths that might slow your site down and create a poor user experience. One way to mitigate slowness in your site caused by images is to compress their file size.

Design Images Specifically for Social Media

Social media sites love images, and some platforms even give favor to content that includes visuals. In fact, photos account for 93 percent of the most engaging posts on Facebook. If you’re planning to market your blog content on your social media channels, make sure you use visuals in your posts.

On Facebook, I recommend using the photo sharing feature (rather than status update option) to share links to your content, which will feature it more prominently in your followers’ newsfeed.

One more tip: Create images specifically for social media promotion that will encourage people to visit your blog. You don’t need Photoshop or Illustrator to do this; PowerPoint will work just fine!
